Det amerikanske metalbandet Avenged Sevenfold spilte i Norge første gang på Hovefestivalen i 2008. Den gang var det få som hadde hørt om gutta, og det var ikke akkurat trangt om plassene.
Et album senere, og en trommis mindre, stod A7X på scenen foran et fullsatt Oslo Spektrum.
Tittelsporet fra den nye platen ”Nightmare” fikk æren av, ikke overraskende, å starte showet. Denne låta er hundre ganger bedre live enn det den er på plate. Dessverre ødelegger dårlig lyd i vokalist M. Shadows mikrofon, og hadde jeg ikke kunnet teksten på sangen ville det hørt ut som om vokalisten bare skrek ut det første og beste han fant på. Noe bedre ble det på andre låten ”Critical Acclaim”, men da de dro i gang klassikeren ”Beast and the Harlot” eksploderte spektrum, og Avenged Sevenfold fikk endelig vise hva de er gode for.
Vikar- trommis Mike Portnoy fikk lov til å vise seg frem under låten ”Welcome to The family” hvor han også ble ønsket velkommen av bandmedlemmene. Naturlig nok glemte de ikke den nylig avdøde Jimmy ”The Rev” Sullivan som også var en viktig låtskriver på albummet. Bandet spilte ”So Far Away” til ære for bandkompisen sin, samt en rørende tale fra M. Shadows.
Høydepunktet var helt klart ”Afterlife” som er en av de beste sangene fra det forrige albumet. Gitarist Synyster Gates spiller en helt fantastisk gitarsolo som får selv den middelaldrende damen ved siden av til å hyle.
Dessverre hadde A7X en alt for kort setliste på bare 10 sanger, med 2 ekstranummer. Konserten var mer et ”Greatest Hits” show enn ”The Nightmare Tour”, og jeg savnet låter som ”Save Me” og ”Natural Born Killer”.
Avenged er, og forblir, et av de beste livebandene i verden. De lager et flott show kombinert med utrolig dyktigere musikere, men er litt uheldige med lydmann.
Heldigvis lovet de å komme tilbake til Norge neste sommer.
